Beef -
Our longhorn herd of
cattle is
currently undergoing organic conversion is
gradually growing in number. During 2007 we
culled just 6 prime steers, retailing them
through Shon Sprackling's Rother Valley
Organics. We also sent some
samples to various chefs in the hope that
this wonderful product may find its way to
top restaurants in the future.
Pork -
we don't know of anywhere else where pigs
roam free over 750 acres of grass fields,
woods and rivers; foraging for grubs and
roots in the winter and grazing in the
summer with no artificial feed. During
2007 we took our first harvest from our
little herd and are in the process of making
some wonderful air-dried ham to rival Serrano!
Surplus animals are again being retailed
through Rother Valley
Organics.
Venison
- each year we cull, using expert marksmen,
a number of fallow deer in the park for the
sustainable management of the herd, and
occasionally roe deer elsewhere on the
Estate. The resulting venison -
wild-reared and entirely chemical-free - is
quite superb and naturally tender. At
present we wholesale our venison to
Chanctonbury Game in Washington, a
neighbouring game dealer, who sells our
produce in local farmers markets.
Small game
and fowl - we occasionally have
pheasant, rabbit, pigeon and duck
(predominately widgeon, teal & mallard)
available. Please do let us know if
you are interested though be warned they
would be supplied in the feather or fur!
Hay –
we can produce organic
herb-rich hay or haylage to order. In
fact we have at present NON ORGANIC hay
& haylage available, cut from our
countryside stewardship land.
Timber –
we are not producing at
present but have plans to convert a number
of oaks for the restoration of some of the
Estate’s traditional barns in 2007/8 and
would be pleased to take orders for timber
to add to our cutting list. We also have working hazel and
chestnut coppice and can sell this both
standing and ‘felled’.
